DevonHouse Senior Living | March 2017 News and Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

March is a pivotal month, ending the long, cold winter and heralding the beginning of spring. Flower shows bloom all over the area, and everywhere there are reminders of the warm weather to come as sprouts spring up from the earth.

We look forward to the garden surrounding DevonHouse renewing again with greenery, flowers, and the cheerful sounds of chirping birds.

With these new beginnings we also welcome two new smiling faces to our front office. Jennifer Hoey joins us as administrative assistant. Wendy Caskie joins us as concierge.

Please join me in welcoming Jennifer and Wendy to DevonHouse. They are both looking forward to getting to know all of the DevonHouse residents and families.

This month, people everywhere will celebrate all things Irish. At DevonHouse we are no exception! We will kick up our heels to the sound of the jig and wish everyone a happy St. Patrick’s Day – and a very happy spring!

Spring is on the way! As the days get longer and brighter, we’re celebrating all things spring, kicking up our heels on St. Patrick’s Day, and looking all the way ahead to our annual Easter events in April.

As spring returns, so does our live eagle cam in the living room. Once again, we are watching the nested pair of bald eagles in Hanover, PA. This camera gives us a “bird’s eye view ” into the lives of the eagles and their two eggs.
Speaking of eggs, throughout the month we’ll be filling plastic Easter eggs for three Easter egg hunts in April: the annual Emmaus Kiwanis Club egg hunt, our annual egg hunt with the second grade classes at Western Salisbury Elementary School, and our own Easter egg hunt for friends and family of DevonHouse. In previous years, our industrious residents have filled over 6,000 eggs!

Filling the plastic Easter eggs will be an ongoing activity. The supplies will be kept in the activity room and available anytime.

So whenever you have free time and motivation come out and get “cracking!”

DevonHouse Senior Living | February 2017 News and Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

I am continually warmed by the greetings that I receive at DevonHouse as – brrr! – February chills permeate the bones. Residents, families, and staff have been so welcoming as they introduce me to life at DevonHouse.

I’d like to take this space to introduce myself as an experienced personal care administrator. I have extensive experience having worked not only in personal care, but with the department of Public Welfare (now known as the Bureau of Human Services) in the Philadelphia area, and the Office of Aging in Centre County.

I am also a wife, and a mother of four grown children. I travel to DevonHouse from Bucks County, where my family lives close to Newtown.

My passion is to serve our residents and their families by providing the finest care
and offering residents the opportunity to actualize their fullest potential. DevonHouse is our resident’s home, and their place to enjoy life with dignity and respect.

Working with senior living residents over many years has provided me with an education, just from learning about their lifelong experiences. It has been an honor to get to know each and every one and their families.

Now, I look forward to sharing a new chapter with each new resident that I meet at DevonHouse!

There’s so much to enjoy in February: Groundhog Day, the Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day, and Fastnacht Day, just to name a few.

We kick off the Super Bowl weekend on February 3rd with the “Souper Bowl,” a soup tasting social. Then, on the day of the big game, join our tailgate party from 1:00 – 3:00 for snacks and treats!

Calling all guys: every Friday after dinner is “Guys Night.” Head to the activity room for poker, beer, and laughs. There’s only one qualification to join!

There’s also just one qualification to be in our elite Centenarian Club. The 100+ Club meets four times a year for reminiscing about “the good old days” with speakers and educators from the community.

This month, we’re continuing our yearly tradition of preparing Valentine’s Day goodie bags for two second-grade classes at Salisbury Elementary School. The bags include a coloring sheet that the students send back to us for a coloring contest.
Vote for your favorite picture in the activity room!

Finally, in honor of Fasnacht Day, the theme of this month’s Ladies Tea will be donuts. You donut want to miss it!

As we start the new year, we are excited about finding creative ways to make 2017 truly terrific. That starts this month with a new program: Dream Catchers. Each month a nominated DevonHouse resident or staff member will have a wish granted.

Our first recipient is resident Violet Haberle. True to her name, Violet has a strong affection for the color purple. She even drove a purple Camaro, purchased when she was 69 years old!

Violet is getting her wish for wild purple streaks in her hair, supplied by our hairdresser. Watch our Facebook page for the fabulous results!

Thanks so much to everyone who joined us for our holiday events. Everyone enjoyed spending time with families and friends of DevonHouse, and we look forward to seeing you throughout 2017.
