DevonHouse Senior Living | February 2018 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

Wow, the cold winter certainly has been bone-chilling!

One can only hope that February’s weather will be more temperate than what we have experienced so far. Winter in Pennsylvania is a survival effort, at least this year!

We’re fortunate here at DevonHouse to have genuine warmth every day, from the sincere friendships of residents and staff. Friendships old and new alike are impervious to the cold weather!

Each of our residents makes a special contribution to the unique, rich, and warm landscape of our community. The cross-section of our residents offers a representation of Allentown and the surrounding area. During their careers, our residents worked for Mack Truck, Bethlehem Steel, Sacred Heart Hospital, Hess Brothers Department Store, Leh’s, Rickle’s Hardware, clothing mills, and many were owners of local farms.

They are truly the fiber of the Lehigh Valley. They have seen Allentown grow from a sleepy town surrounded by agriculture and a small amusement park called Dorney, to the busy metropolis it is today.

It warms my heart to reminisce with many of our residents and families who have become the fiber of the DevonHouse community. Spending each day with them is an honor.

Best Wishes,
Renee Ackerman

DevonHouse Senior Living | January 2018 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

Image of snowy pathWelcome to 2018!

Another year begins, a fresh, clean slate on which we etch many good intentions and resolutions for the coming months. With lofty intentions and idealistic goals, we are filled with optimism for the future. My hope this year is that we will all find solutions not only for our meeting personal challenges, but for finding peace in the world and bringing home our troops that are serving on foreign soil.

In January, we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by offering a day dedicated to service. On the third Monday of the month, many of us participate in the MLK National Day of Service, in which Americans offer their hard work and strong backs to make others’ lives better.

On the home front, here at DevonHouse we are looking forward to many new and innovative ideas in 2018, fostered by our staff, to enrich the lives of each of our residents and to encourage their unique contributions to making our community even stronger.

We look forward to seeing more of our residents’ families and friends in 2018. I encourage you to continue to be part of the rich “fabric” of DevonHouse. I invite you to get to know our staff — we’re all on the same team to enrich the lives of your loved ones.

Here’s to a great start to 2018!

Best Wishes,
Renee Ackerman

DevonHouse Senior Living | December 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

image of holiday candlesWow, the holidays have arrived! Signs of the holiday season arrive earlier and earlier each year, but now it’s really here with seasonal music non-stop until New Year’s Day to keep us all in the spirit.

At my home, my daughters-in-law have a ritual: as soon as the turkey has been consumed on Thanksgiving Day, they gear up for a fun day of Black Friday shopping together. They grab their coupons and plot for the best bargains at every store.

Like many others, I enjoy finding a special gift that enhances the receiver’s joy, too. It may be a home-cooked meal that is delivered and shared in companionship with a homebound relative. I also enjoy placing a personal handwritten note in my seasonal cards rather than just a preprinted signature.

Hopefully, it brings a smile to the receiver and a glimpse into my life. I find that when I focus on the important elements of the season ¬– family and friends – the hoopla that surrounds me takes a sabbatical, leaving a sense of peace and tranquility in this season of busy-ness.

Our residents have cherished memories of past holidays – memories of loved ones that have passed and of children that have grown. It is a very special time to relive time honored traditions with family and friends. We invite everyone to join us over the holidays to make some new memories!

Warmest wishes,
Renee

DevonHouse Senior Living | November 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

November ushers in the start of the holiday season. Suddenly the pace quickens and the activities escalate!

After a late burst of extremely warm weather in October, the chill is in the air and the last colorful leaves are swirling to the ground with the winds of late fall. All of these changes denote the arrival of the holidays, and the pleasure of spending time creating special memories with family and friends.

On Veterans Day we salute our residents who have served in the armed forces to preserve the freedoms that we enjoy. Our resident veterans span multiple generations, and represent those who served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam.

At DevonHouse, we are preparing a delicious dinner complete with all of the trimmings and a carving station for the turkey. Our chef is also baking up a variety of scrumptious pies for our holiday meal, and as part of our annual holiday pie sale.

During this month of thanks, I do wish to say a special thank you to our residents’ families and friends for the opportunity to serve their loved ones. It is my pleasure to get to know each and every one of you.

Warmest wishes,
Renee Ackerman

DevonHouse Senior Living | October 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

We can all sense the change in the season… a crispness in the air, and the hues of the changing leaves remind me of the majesty of a king’s robe. The fall chrysanthemums heighten the excitement with the magnificent golds, purples, and crimsons peering out from every corner. Pumpkins have ripened in the field, ready to be picked by excited children and become scary jack-o-lanterns for trick or treat!

The first brisk chill in the air always sends my spirits soaring and quickens my step. I truly love the fall! It is the harbinger of all of the excitement of the upcoming season!

While children may look forward to Halloween with the ghosts, goblins, and candy, grown-ups have something to look forward to as well: Oktoberfest! We celebrate the cooler weather with hearty autumn feasts.

With scarecrows of various lineage welcoming the season, we invite you to join us in a month of celebration!

Best Wishes,

DevonHouse Senior Living | August 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

image of postcardThe dog days of summer are upon us. The tomatoes are ripening all at once and the garden is brimming with zucchinis! Our bakers are challenged to find recipes to use all the garden’s bounty, and I always feel compelled to can the abundance of the garden — something left over from my early training.

With the heat and humidity occasionally punctuated by the first cool breezes of fall, we’re reminded that summer is passing so quickly — much too quickly for me!

Summer is a special time for families to gather. Family reunions and plain old “get-togethers” give young and old alike a chance to reaffirm family ties. It seems like a miracle to be introduced to all the new babies born in the last year and feel the common denominator of kinship. As we catch up on all the family news, we rub elbows with several generations.

Just listen! The stories and histories handed down from the older generation provide us with a wealth of knowledge that textbooks could never duplicate.

I continue to be honored to learn valuable lessons and witness the living history that our residents at DevonHouse offer every day. Through my many years of working, I still marvel at the insight and wisdom I have gleaned from each and every resident who has personally touched my life.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Warmest regards,

DevonHouse Senior Living | July 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

All around the country, communities are gearing up to provide absolutely breathtaking fireworks displays. Here in Allentown it is our chance to proclaim our varied cultural heritage and show gratitude to our forefathers. The red, white, and blue buntings are being draped and crisp new flags are swaying in the breeze as we prepare for a star-spangled fourth.

Summer is truly “sizzling” here! The residents of DevonHouse will be celebrating Independence Day with a special holiday picnic meal prepared by our staff, including favorites from the grill. All picnic delicacies will be served with the convenience of eating inside in the cool dining room or outside on the back patio, enjoying the warm breeze.

The strains of the local summer favorite “On the way to Cape May” fill my head as I wait with great anticipation for our musical entertainment to play the perennial favorite. Our residents enjoy reminiscing of “days gone by” when a trip to the seashore was the highlight of the summer.

They walked the “boards” at night and enjoyed the beach and surf for free. No beach tags for their generation! They were thrilled by the diving horse when they visited the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, long before there were casinos.

We wish to thank all our residents and their families for their patience during our front renovation. We are looking forward to a beautiful new entrance!

Warmest regards,
– Renee

DevonHouse Senior Living | June 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

image of gardenJune is certainly a month to celebrate, complete with weddings, graduations and Father’s Day. It is the perfect month to spend time with your loved ones, taking in the beautiful warm days of early summer.

At DevonHouse, we invite you to enjoy the serenity of our location, with plenty of comfortable seating and shade on our back patio. It certainly renews the soul!

On Father’s Day, we salute the men who have guided us for a job well done! We all must nurture the special memories of our fathers, whether living or deceased, related by blood or by the heart.

The dad in your life may have been the one that taught you to ride a bike. He was the one that chased away bad dreams, coached the baseball team after he finished ten hours at work, and tutored you in math. He grilled steaks on the outside barbecue and waited up anxiously until you came home from a date. And it was Dad whose eyes brimmed with tears of pride when you introduced him to his first grandchild.

Thanks, Dads, for being there for us! Your role certainly should be celebrated more often than just on Father’s Day!

Warmest regards,
– Renee

DevonHouse Senior Living | May 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

This month we delight in paying special tribute to our mothers, who nurtured us and selflessly guided us to become the adults we are today.

Personally, it has taken me years of reflection to fully understand the complexities of my own mother and the forces that molded and motivated her in her lifetime. She was a self-made career woman who fought against the prejudices of the time to work her way up the corporate ladder and achieve success in her field.

As youth, we can be so judgmental of our elders. As we age, we develop a sense of gratitude and awe of the obstacles that previous generations surmounted to give us the opportunities we enjoy today.

This is the generation that is served by DevonHouse. Every day we pay them tribute through our efforts and say a special “thank you” for a lifetime of service.

On Memorial Day, may we remember all those who have served in the armed forces and protected the freedoms we enjoy. The Greatest Generation representing WWII along with those men and women of the Korean Conflict still reign at DevonHouse.

Thank you to all veterans for your service!
