DevonHouse Senior Living | October 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

We can all sense the change in the season… a crispness in the air, and the hues of the changing leaves remind me of the majesty of a king’s robe. The fall chrysanthemums heighten the excitement with the magnificent golds, purples, and crimsons peering out from every corner. Pumpkins have ripened in the field, ready to be picked by excited children and become scary jack-o-lanterns for trick or treat!

The first brisk chill in the air always sends my spirits soaring and quickens my step. I truly love the fall! It is the harbinger of all of the excitement of the upcoming season!

While children may look forward to Halloween with the ghosts, goblins, and candy, grown-ups have something to look forward to as well: Oktoberfest! We celebrate the cooler weather with hearty autumn feasts.

With scarecrows of various lineage welcoming the season, we invite you to join us in a month of celebration!

Best Wishes,
Renee Ackerman

DevonHouse Senior Living | August 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

image of postcardThe dog days of summer are upon us. The tomatoes are ripening all at once and the garden is brimming with zucchinis! Our bakers are challenged to find recipes to use all the garden’s bounty, and I always feel compelled to can the abundance of the garden — something left over from my early training.

With the heat and humidity occasionally punctuated by the first cool breezes of fall, we’re reminded that summer is passing so quickly — much too quickly for me!

Summer is a special time for families to gather. Family reunions and plain old “get-togethers” give young and old alike a chance to reaffirm family ties. It seems like a miracle to be introduced to all the new babies born in the last year and feel the common denominator of kinship. As we catch up on all the family news, we rub elbows with several generations.

Just listen! The stories and histories handed down from the older generation provide us with a wealth of knowledge that textbooks could never duplicate.

I continue to be honored to learn valuable lessons and witness the living history that our residents at DevonHouse offer every day. Through my many years of working, I still marvel at the insight and wisdom I have gleaned from each and every resident who has personally touched my life.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Warmest regards,
Renee Ackerman, Executive Director

DevonHouse Senior Living | July 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

All around the country, communities are gearing up to provide absolutely breathtaking fireworks displays. Here in Allentown it is our chance to proclaim our varied cultural heritage and show gratitude to our forefathers. The red, white, and blue buntings are being draped and crisp new flags are swaying in the breeze as we prepare for a star-spangled fourth.

Summer is truly “sizzling” here! The residents of DevonHouse will be celebrating Independence Day with a special holiday picnic meal prepared by our staff, including favorites from the grill. All picnic delicacies will be served with the convenience of eating inside in the cool dining room or outside on the back patio, enjoying the warm breeze.

The strains of the local summer favorite “On the way to Cape May” fill my head as I wait with great anticipation for our musical entertainment to play the perennial favorite. Our residents enjoy reminiscing of “days gone by” when a trip to the seashore was the highlight of the summer.

They walked the “boards” at night and enjoyed the beach and surf for free. No beach tags for their generation! They were thrilled by the diving horse when they visited the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, long before there were casinos.

We wish to thank all our residents and their families for their patience during our front renovation. We are looking forward to a beautiful new entrance!

Warmest regards,
– Renee

DevonHouse Senior Living | June 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

image of gardenJune is certainly a month to celebrate, complete with weddings, graduations and Father’s Day. It is the perfect month to spend time with your loved ones, taking in the beautiful warm days of early summer.

At DevonHouse, we invite you to enjoy the serenity of our location, with plenty of comfortable seating and shade on our back patio. It certainly renews the soul!

On Father’s Day, we salute the men who have guided us for a job well done! We all must nurture the special memories of our fathers, whether living or deceased, related by blood or by the heart.

The dad in your life may have been the one that taught you to ride a bike. He was the one that chased away bad dreams, coached the baseball team after he finished ten hours at work, and tutored you in math. He grilled steaks on the outside barbecue and waited up anxiously until you came home from a date. And it was Dad whose eyes brimmed with tears of pride when you introduced him to his first grandchild.

Thanks, Dads, for being there for us! Your role certainly should be celebrated more often than just on Father’s Day!

Warmest regards,
– Renee

DevonHouse Senior Living | May 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

This month we delight in paying special tribute to our mothers, who nurtured us and selflessly guided us to become the adults we are today.

Personally, it has taken me years of reflection to fully understand the complexities of my own mother and the forces that molded and motivated her in her lifetime. She was a self-made career woman who fought against the prejudices of the time to work her way up the corporate ladder and achieve success in her field.

As youth, we can be so judgmental of our elders. As we age, we develop a sense of gratitude and awe of the obstacles that previous generations surmounted to give us the opportunities we enjoy today.

This is the generation that is served by DevonHouse. Every day we pay them tribute through our efforts and say a special “thank you” for a lifetime of service.

On Memorial Day, may we remember all those who have served in the armed forces and protected the freedoms we enjoy. The Greatest Generation representing WWII along with those men and women of the Korean Conflict still reign at DevonHouse.

Thank you to all veterans for your service!

DevonHouse Senior Living | April 2017 News & Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

A most anticipated spring is finally arriving!

After a tease in March, temperatures are rising and flowers are just blooming. Our tree limbs are getting ready to burst into leaf, forsythias are dancing in the breeze, and the sun is warming the earth – and my soul!

Spring gives us a feeling of renewal and we are invigorated with energy and optimism. The robins have arrived and are preening themselves in the sun, much to the delight of our residents who enjoy watching them.

I am always pleased to experience the longer days, as they allow me to spend time in nature with my horses. With all their pent up energy, the horses delight in racing through the fields. We may not run in the grass ourselves, but the longer days of sun seem to uplift the spirit of all of us!

As spring renews our energy, I look forward to seeing everyone here at DevonHouse for our spring events. And, I would like to personally wish each and every one of you a wonderful Passover and happy Easter!

Spring is on the way! As the days get longer and brighter, we’re celebrating all things spring, kicking up our heels on St. Patrick’s Day, and looking all the way ahead to our annual Easter events in April.

As spring returns, so does our live eagle cam in the living room. Once again, we are watching the nested pair of bald eagles in Hanover, PA. This camera gives us a “bird’s eye view ” into the lives of the eagles and their two eggs.
Speaking of eggs, throughout the month we’ll be filling plastic Easter eggs for three Easter egg hunts in April: the annual Emmaus Kiwanis Club egg hunt, our annual egg hunt with the second grade classes at Western Salisbury Elementary School, and our own Easter egg hunt for friends and family of DevonHouse. In previous years, our industrious residents have filled over 6,000 eggs!

Filling the plastic Easter eggs will be an ongoing activity. The supplies will be kept in the activity room and available anytime.

DevonHouse Senior Living | February 2017 News and Events

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

I am continually warmed by the greetings that I receive at DevonHouse as – brrr! – February chills permeate the bones. Residents, families, and staff have been so welcoming as they introduce me to life at DevonHouse.

I’d like to take this space to introduce myself as an experienced personal care administrator. I have extensive experience having worked not only in personal care, but with the department of Public Welfare (now known as the Bureau of Human Services) in the Philadelphia area, and the Office of Aging in Centre County.

I am also a wife, and a mother of four grown children. I travel to DevonHouse from Bucks County, where my family lives close to Newtown.

My passion is to serve our residents and their families by providing the finest care
and offering residents the opportunity to actualize their fullest potential. DevonHouse is our resident’s home, and their place to enjoy life with dignity and respect.

Working with senior living residents over many years has provided me with an education, just from learning about their lifelong experiences. It has been an honor to get to know each and every one and their families.

Now, I look forward to sharing a new chapter with each new resident that I meet at DevonHouse!
